CONTEMPORARY BRITISH TAILORING SINCE 1937

It was on the 20th September 1937 that long-established West End cutters, Harry Benson and Thomas Clegg, first opened their doors for business at 34 Bury Street, offering their celebrated style of tailoring to the great and the good of London’s high society, creating a unique tailoring profile from their club lounge shop in London’s St James’s.

Harry and Thomas’s philosophy was that bespoke tailoring should be accessible to all, complemented with a welcoming and relaxed approach to building longstanding relationships with their clients – an ethos that encapsulates the spirit of the company today.

A TAILORING LEGACY

Harry and Thomas built and maintained an undisputed reputation in the world of tailoring, positioning themselves as experts upon the landscape of British menswear. It was Harry Benson who, during the early stages of his illustrious career, was integral in the design and development of the backless evening dress waistcoat.

This innovation in tailored menswear was popularized by the royalty and aristocracy of the time, becoming – and remaining – a mainstay of gentlemen’s formal dress which continues to be worn across the world.

MADE FOR TODAY

Today, we continue to push the boundaries of modern menswear, while remaining committed to the ideals and values of traditional British craft. From our home in London’s Piccadilly Arcade, we combine our luxury retail space with our clubroom tailoring lounge to offer clients a place to relax and unwind – more private members club than traditional tailor’s shop.

“BENSON & CLEGG MAY OCCUPY A RELATIVELY SMALL TWO-STOREY SHOP ON PICCADILLY ARCADE IN ST JAMES’S, BUT ITS MULLIONED WINDOWS BELIE A TAILORING HOUSE WITH A BIG PERSONALITY.”
